Pancreas treatments are complex and multi-modal in approach. Not all CyberKnife® centres offer these as they require special software and treatments may be difficult to coordinate for international patients.
Unfortunately the great majority of diagnosed cases are late stage and metastatic, making treatment difficult or impossible and survival rates are poor. Although making only a small proportion of all cancers diagnosed it is one of the major causes of death. Surgery is the treatment of choice for early, resectable pancreatic cancer, but only about 20% of tumours are resectable, failing which chemotherapy has been used as an adjunct to radiation treatment.
Of all the forms of cancer or neurosurgical treatments offered by CyberKnife, pancreatic cancer makes up a large number of our direct patient enquiries. This is clearly due to extensive coverage in the media of one well known individual. Patients should bear in mind that media reports frequently over-simplify or may simply be wrong and there are different forms of pancreatic cancer, some of which are more amenable to CyberKnife treatment than others.
Individual CyberKnife centres may adopt slightly different approaches to which cases they will treat and how they will treat them, including how many treatment sessions are required. Visit Accuray Inc. pancreas cancer page
